This week is the last official week that President Biden will be in office. President – elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office January 20th (which is on Martin Luther King Jr Day). Michelle Obama announced a few hours ago that she would not be in attendance for Trumps inauguration. A few hours later a source close to Michelle Obama detailed the former first lady does not want to fake a smile for someone whom she still considers a threat to American democracy.
The source detailed “There’s no overstating her feelings about Trump. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol’s sake. Michelle doesn’t do anything because it’s expected or it’s protocol or its tradition”.
This may also explain why Michelle Obama was surprisingly absent during Jimmy Carter’s state funeral. Many speculated the reason behind her absence as some noted that Michelle Obama may have had a prior engagement. A source close to Michelle Obama confirmed that she had a scheduling conflict stating that she was in Hawaii on an extended vacation.
Either way this is not the first time a notable figure that has lived in the White House has decided to not attend an inauguration. President – elect Donald Trump decided to skip President Bidens inauguration after losing the 2020 reelection. Trump’s absence was the first time since 1869 that a president refused to attend their successor’s inauguration. Michelle Obama is sticking to her motto on this one, “When they go low, we go high”. Taking the high road of maybe just watching the inauguration at home, or not at all.
