The wildfires in California was definitely not on anyone’s bingo card for the start of 2025. Many Californians are posting their burnt down houses on Instagram and making jokes about the situation to keep sane, I don’t blame them, however, Khloe Kardashian is blaming LA Mayor Karen Bass for the lack of emergency preparedness.
Reportedly Karen Bass unveiled a budget plan for 2024-2025 to reduce spending for the Los Angeles Fire Department by 2.7%, which would result in a $23 million dollar cut to the department with much of the cuts targeted towards reducing equipment purchases (yikes).
The kicker is that the City Council ended up approving raises for firefighters for more than $53 million and the council signed off on a $58 million dollar deal to provide the city with new firetrucks and other department purchases which ultimately grew the fire department budget by more than 7%.
While the city approved raises for fire fighters and provided money for firetrucks the city also cut dozens of civilian positions in the department and reduced overtime capability for staff to the point where it “severely limited the departments capacity to prepare for, train for, and respond to large-scale emergencies, including wildfires. According to LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley.
So what does all of this mean? While Khloe Kardashian is entitled to her own opinion on how Karen Bass is handling the fires, it is crucial to know that the Karen Bass is the mayor of LA City and not the county of LA. There are 88 cities in Los Angelos county and Karen Bass is the mayor of LA City. The majority of the fires are in Palisade, Eaton and Hurst (other cities in LA county). While many in LA city agree with Khloe Kardashians option of Karen Bass being a “joke”, it is safe to say that Karen Bass will turn out to be the scapegoat of the fires being that LA is the nation’s second largest city.
